The data come from a video-recording of an English language classroom at a Japanese university. During a segment of the interaction lasting approximately thirty seconds, the participants accomplish a transition from a student-centered group discussion to a teacher-led whole-class discussion. I will briefly present my ideas regarding this segment, focusing on 1) the collaborative initiation of the transition, 2) the framing of the group discussion as completed and commentable, and 3) student role orientations. We will then move to a discussion of the data in a data-session format.
